The film festival takes place in the village of Inari which is the center of Sami area of Finland. In Inari Sami language it’s called Aanaar, in Skolt Sami it’s Aanar and in Northern Sami it’s Anár. Inari is the largest municipality in Finland and it’s located in the province of Lapland. Inari is a bilingual municipality – the spoken languages are Finnish, Northern Sámi, Inari Sámi and Skolt Sámi. About 700 people live in the village of Inari, which is located on the shore of Lake Inari.
During the festival, movies are enjoyed in three locations; Sámi Museum and Nature Centre Siida, Sámi Cultural Centre Sajos and the Northern Lights Theater built for the festival. The Northern Lights Theater is one of the most important trademarks of the Skábmagovat festival, and no wonder; coldest show in Skábmagovat history has been at extreme temperature of -40 degrees Celsius.
