Merata Mita was a great pioneer of indigenous cinema. In an intimate documentary, Hepi Mita describes her mother’s colourful journey of becoming the first Māori woman who wrote and directed a feature film. Mita’s political documentaries shed light on racial, class and gender issues in the 1970s and 1980s in ways that often split New Zealand.
